Stove Jack: What it is for a camping tent

Want to burn a wood stove inside a camping hot tent? A lightweight camping shelter must have a safe way for the stove pipe exit the living area. Mostly because the stove pipe gets very hot, and without using some precautions, the tent wall fabric will melt or burn. The most common way to provide a closable and sealable hole in a tent, is called a stove jack port. This allows you to have the wood stove smoke to exit the shelter, and still not let the cold weather inside the sleeping area.

What is a Stove Jack?

We have been getting a lot of questions in our customer service, on what exactly a Stove Jack is for a tent. A Stove Jack makes it possible to put out a tent stove pipe through a shelter wall hole.

Most Common Heat Resistant Fabric

The fabric of the stove jack is usually made up of a fiberglass silicone fabric, that's very heat resistance to super high temperatures. Then they are attached to the tent by either sewing them directly in at the manufacturer, or you can do it yourself usually or have it done at let's say a sail shop, or this one is just velcroed in and the velcro is sewn onto the fabric.

About the Stove Jack Hole

The hole is usually protected or can be expanded such as this one, can go to a couple different sizes or you could cut this out to a bigger stove pipe, based upon what type of stove you're using.

Protecting the Hole from Rain, Snow and Wind

Often you'll see that a rain cover, so they'll use two layers of silicone fiberglass fabric and they'll have it all the way over the hole to protect it, when you're not using the stove.

Cutting to Fit Large Stove Pipes

So if I had the pipe this big on the smaller Stove Jack, I would have to use a stove pipe protector sleeve, so that the fabric, which would be roughly here, wouldn't get a lot of heat.
