Hot Tent Stove Center Bushcraft Placement

Placing Hot Tent Stove Correctly Pro Tips

Placing a hot tent stove optimally is a very important consideration. Heat efficiency, chimney flue pipe stability and overall functionality are just a few topics.  Let's go over some pros and cons of a stove location inside a shelter.

Greater Chimney Flue Pipe Stability

Many titanium tent stoves are non-freestanding to save weight.  This means they need a shelter wall with a stove jack sewn into it to support the chimney flue pipe. As a general rule, the further up the pipe height of the shelter, the more stable it is going to be.

So the tent must be one of the two things, either very large in height or you must place the stove in the center of the floor-plan, given that there will be enough buffer space between your sleeping area and the red hot wood stove.

Optimize Wood Stove Heat Output

The placement of a wood stove in your tents floor-plan is very important, when trying to get the most heat output out of each individual firewood piece. As a general rule, the more of the chimney flue pipe that is inside your shelter before exiting the stove jack, the more heat efficient it is going to be.  This is one of the many reasons why tent stoves should have short legs.

Leave a Safety Buffer Space

It's important to leave a safety buffer between your sleeping area and a wood stove. This will help prevent accidentally burning a hole in that expensive outdoor gear. Secondly, the user will also want to make sure the wood stove is not too close to the shelter wall.
